Sheldon has hydrocephalus, a cleft nose and lip (but a closed palate), a grade 2 heart murmur, mild cerebellar hypoplasia, and mild nystagmus. We do not know if it was all caused by a random congenital malformation, a chromosomal abnormality, or a perinatal infection - we are hoping we will find out one day. We keep a very close eye on his health... and we are truly thankful every single day that he is currently very healthy, strong, stable, and a super trooper!!!! Overall - our special needs cats are fairly low maintenance... and we love them sooooo much!!!! We are beyond blessed!!!
When Sheldon was a kitten - his eyes bulged quite a bit and turned downward and outward due to the increased pressure in the brain from the blocked and/or extra cerebral spinal fluid (hydrocephalus). His eyes are so much better now - but they still show quite a bit of white when he looks in certain directions, his left eye tends to turn outward when he is sleepy, and they always look extra large and “surprised” when they are open. He is our wide-eyed wonder - and he really is doing awesome!! He has always been seizure free and seems to be able to see fairly well. He has a neurologist that we consult with from time to time - but we just mostly see our regular vets for appointments. He takes a tiny daily dose of prednisolone, a larger daily dose of omeprazole, and we carefully avoid any type of head trauma (which can be worrisome because our boy like to PLAY!). We also have accommodations around the house to account for his complete inability to jump (and for our other cats’ needs). In the future - we are prepared to obtain a MRI or a shunt if necessary - but right now he is doing absolutely fantastic!!!
Sheldon has a cleft nose and lip (but a closed palate) so he does not have any trouble eating. His adorable tongue often pops out and hangs a bit from the cleft in his mouth/nose. It looks perfect on him!
Sheldon's has a mild heart murmur - it has recently been been slightly downgraded from a grade 2 heart murmur to a grade 1-2 heart murmur. Hopefully it will continue to improve! We monitor it with an occasional ECG and we are always prepared to get him an echocardiogram if needed. It is obvious he has a special heart!!!
